Description

Head injury can sometimes result in psychosis afterwards.


 

Features of psychosis following head injury:

(1) The trauma is usually to the right temporoparietal region.

(2) The onset may be months after the injury.

(3) The patient may suffer hallucinations, delusions and/or agitation.

(4) Many of the patients developed post-traumatic seizures.

(5) The patient often experiences spatioconstructional difficulties.

 

Other causes of psychosis should be excluded:

(1) substance abuse

(2) pre-existing mental illness

(3) psychological trauma during childhood (vs physical abuse)
