Description

The psilocybin syndrome may occur following intentional or accidental ingestion of a mushroom with hallucinogenic properties. The active ingredients are derivatives of tryptamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine. They have been used for centuries by Native Americans for religious practice.

Active ingredient:

(1) psilocybin (phosphate ester of psilocin)

(2) psilocin

(3) baeocystin

 

Mushrooms producing:

(1) Psilocybe genera (multiple species)

(2) Panaeolus genera (multiple species)

(3) Strophaeria

(4) Panaeolina foenisecii

(5) Gymnaopilus spectabilis

(6) Pluteus salicinus

(7) Inocybe aeruginascens

 

Onset of symptoms is usually 20-60 minutes after ingestion.

 

Clinical features:

(1) unmotivated laughter and euphoria

(2) hallucinations

(3) disorientiation

(4) convulsions, especially in children

(5) hyperkinetic compulsive movements

(6) panic or anxiety

(7) headache

(8) vertigo

(9) coma

 

Systemic features:

(1) change in heart rate (tachycardia or bradycardia)

(2) fever

(3) hypotension

(4) muscular weakness

(5) nausea
