Description

Wagstaff et al identified prognostic factors for patients with Stage IIIB and IV Hodgkin's disease. This can help identify patients who may require more aggressive therapy. The authors are from St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London.

Parameters:

(1) gender

(2) age

(3) stage

(4) lymphocyte count

Prognostic Rules as Stated in Figure 6

Prognosis

age < 45 years with lymphocyte count >= 750 per µL

female with Stage IIIB

low risk

female with stage IV and age >= 45 years

female with stage IV and lymphocyte count < 750 per µL

male stage IIIB and >= 45 years

male stage IIIB and lymphocyte count < 750 per µL

intermediate

male stage IV and >= 45 years

male stage IV and lymphocyte count < 750 per µL

high risk

where:

• Age = 45 years was not stated in rule, but Table 1 shows groups as < 45 and >= 45.

• The lymphocyte count = 750 per µL (0.75 * 10^9/L) is not given.

There are 16 combinations for the 4 factors:

Limitations:

• As new treatments become available there may be improvement in the prognosis for the intermediate and high risk groups.
