Description

Sanaei-Zadeh et al reported a number of factors associated with mortality in patients with methanol poisoning. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Shahid Beheshti University and Hazrat Rasoul Akram Hospital in Tehran.

Patient selection: methanol poisoing

Poor prognostic factors:

(1) coma on admission

(2) seizures on admission

(3) severe metabolic acidosis with low arterial pH, low bicarbonate and high base deficit

(4) hyperglycemia (blood glucose > 140 mg/dL)

where:

• A pH <= 7.1 looks significant according to Table 2. Nonsurvivors had a pH of 6.94 +/- 0.2 and survivors had a pH of 7.16 +/- 0.2.
