Park et al evaluated patients undergoing surgery to resect craniofacial fibrous dysplasia. They identified prognostic factors for these patients. The authors are from Yonsei University and Ewha Women's University and Ajou University in the Republic of Korea.
Patient selection: craniofacial fibrous dysplasia
Prognostic factors:
(1) complete vs incomplete resection (the most important prognostic factor)
(2) age of the patient in years, with a patient >= 17 years of age less likely to show progression after incomplete resection
The serum alkaline phosphatase is a simple marker that can be monitored for recurrence. A sudden increase in serum levels is associated with disease recurrence and progression.
