Description

Harb et al identified prognostic factors for patients 80 years of age or older with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The authors are from Roswell Park Cancer Institute and State University of New York at Buffalo.

Patient selection: patient >= 80 years of age with AML undergoing treatment

Favorable prognostic factors:

(1) complete response to therapy

(2) age < 83 years (i.e., 80 to 82.9)

Unfavorable prognostic factors:

(1) serum albumin < 3.4 g/dL

(2) acute monocytic, myelomonocytic or monoblastic leukemia

The overall survival is generally poor with more than half of patients dying within the year and very few living to 2 years.
