Description

Hand lotions can help moisturize the skin after frequent hand washings. However, skin lotions may also introduce a number of problems that need to be addressed. Healthcare workers should only use lotions that have been approved after a careful product evaluation.

do not refill container, use pump container to limit container entry, use small containers frequently discarded

inactivation of topical antibacterial agents

select lotions that do not interfere with antibacterial agents

mineral oil can weaken latex gloves, causing breakage

either use a lotion without mineral oil, or switch to a glove not affected by the oil

mineral oil can dissolve latex gloves, with release of latex which can affect latex sensitive persons

either use a lotion without mineral oil, or switch to a glove not affected by the oil

contains allergens

use a hypoallergenic lotion
