Description

Kickback refers to a sudden backward, upward and/or outward motion of a chainsaw's guide bar. The operator may lose control of the saw, which can result in serious injury to bystanders or the operator. Certain steps can help reduce the occurrence of kickback while operating a chain saw.

DO's:

(1) Grip the saw firmly with both hands. The thumbs and fingers should encircle the saw handles.

(2) Keep proper footing and balance at all times.

(3) Use devices that enhance safety such as low kickback chain, guide bar nose guard, chain brakes, and an anti-kickback guide bar.

(4) Use only chains and replacement parts specifically approved for the chain saw's make and model.

DON’Ts:

(1) Do not overreach.

(2) Do not cut above shoulder height.

(3) Do not touch the nose of the guide bar to an object while the chain is moving (may result in rotational kickback).

(4) Do not let wood close in and pinch the chain within the cut while the chain is moving (may result in pinch kickback).
