Description

Jellyfish stings may range from minor irritations to a life-threatening event. Swimmers can minimize their risk of serious jellyfish stings by following some simple guidelines.

Awareness: Jellyfish stings are more likely to occur

(1) in tropical and subtropical regions

(2) in the summer

(3) during hot, still weather with light winds (northerly in Australia)

Behavior that reduces risk:

(1) obey posted warning signs

(2) wear protective clothing (lycra "stinger suits", pantyhose)

(3) swim on patrolled beaches; do not swim alone

(4) swim in stinger-resistant nets, if available

Available first aid supplies:

(1) bottles of vinegar to pour over the tentacles for inhibiting the nematocysts.

(2) compression bandages for wrapping the sting areas after the tentacles have been removed.

(3) ice to apply over the compression bandages to help control pain

(4) analgesics
