Description

A person may be exposed to carbon monoxide (CO) in the home if certain combustion sources are present.


 

Sources of carbon monoxide:

(1) malfunctioning heating system, water heater, or any gas, oil or coal burning appliance

(2) electricity generator operated inside the home

(3) using a camp stove, gas grill or charcoal grill inside the house

(4) using a gasoline or charcoal burning device inside the house

(5) using a gas oven to heat a room

(6) running a car or truck in the garage (even with garage door open)

(7) burning anything in a stove or fireplace that is not vented

 

Ways to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide exposure:

(1) keep all combustion appliances in good repair and inspected annually

(2) install a carbon monoxide detector, changing the batteries frequently

(3) keep all fireplaces and stoves clean and well-vented

 

where:

• They recommend changing the batteries in the carbon monoxide detector in the spring and fall when times change (which does not work in Indiana).

 

Evacuate the house immediately if:

(1) the carbon monoxide detector sounds

(2) you suddenly feel dizzy, light-headed or nauseated
