Description

Blister beetles (Paederus and other genera) release chemicals that can cause a dermatitis if they are crushed against the skin.


 

Steps to avoid blister beetle dermatitis:

(1) use bed nets at night

(2) use insect screens if windows or doors are left open

(3) wear long-sleeve shirts and pants

(4) use insect repellant

(5) avoid fluorescent lights

(6) brush insects off

(7) avoid crushing insects with the fingers or hand against bare skin

(8) do not rub your eyes with fingers after crushing an insect

(9) wash all exposed skin as soon as possible
