Description

A waived test can give accurate results provided it is performed correctly. The CDC has prepared a pretest checklist that can help prevent problems causing inaccurate results.

Pretest checklist:

(1) The work surface should be free of trash and clutter.

(2) The work area should have adequate lighting.

(3) Any required temperature readings should be checked and recorded.

(4) Any necessary test supplies should be readily available.

(5) A biohazard container should be available and usable (not overfilled).

(6) The current manufacturer's instructions and/or a procedure manual should be readily available.

(7) Check the product insert and kit label for changes or cautions.

(8) Check and record lot numbers for the test kit.

(9) Check and record lot number for controls.

(10) Make sure the test kit and controls are not expired. If expired then immediately discard.

(11) Do not mix lots of reagents or controls for an instrument.

(12) Do not mix reagents or controls for different products.

(13) If a new lot of controls or reagents are used, perform quality control after opening the kit and check the package insert for any change in the control ranges.

(14) Write the data and time on the reagent vial or container when first opening.

(15) Store and prepare reagents according to current manufacturer instructions.

(16) Allow any refrigerated reagents or patient samples to reach room temperature before testing if specified in the product insert.

(17) Visually inspect reagents and vials for damage, discoloration or contamination.

(18) Inspect equipment for integrity. Portable equipment should be checked if recently moved.

(19) Inspect electrical connections and/or batteries for integrity.

(20) Perform any required maintenance on the equipment.

(21) Check controls on the day of testing as required by the manufacturer. If the instrument contains an internal calibrator, conduct the test as specified by the manufacturer.

(22) Record all quality control results and calibrations in a permanent log.

(23) A test requisition or physician order is available.

(24) Make sure the patient has been properly identified and the specimen is properly labeled.
