Every family should plan for an emergency, then periodically rehearse the steps so that everyone is familiar with them.
Identify:
(1) the types of disasters that are likely to be encountered
(2) those who will take responsibility for the less able
(3) a nearby meeting place for people to assemble
(4) a remote meeting place for people to assemble
(5) reliable friends or neighbors who can provide support
Write down:
(1) the names of all family members
(2) the numbers for all cell phones used by family members
(3) the numbers for police, fire and other emergency services
(4) the phone number of distant family member or friend who can serve as a contact person in case people become separated
(5) vehicle identification information (make, year, license plate number)
(6) radio and television stations where emergency information is made available
Locate:
(1) where utilities (gas, electricity, etc.) can be turned off in an emergency
(2) essential tools
(3) special hazards that need to be taken care of in the event of a disaster (flammable liquid supplies, etc)
(4) an emergency radio
(5) a suitable means of identification for everyone
(6) essential keys to buildings and vehicles
Prepare a list of:
(1) essential food and water supplies
(2) essential medicines and first aid supplies
(3) essential clothing
(4) other essential supplies
(5) essential papers and possessions
