Description

Wali et al identified factors associated with preserved splenic function in a child with sickle cell disease (SCD). These can help to identify a child at low risk of developing functional asplenia. The authors are from Sultan Qaboos University in Al-Khod, Muscat, Oman.

Factors predictive of preserved splenic function:

(1) mild sickle cell disease

(2) presence of alpha-thalassemia trait

(3) larger spleen

(4) higher levels of hemoglobin F (>= 10%)

(5) low MCV

where:

• The abstract mentions a low MCH but the text refers to a low MCV.

• The serum ferritin level was not associated with splenic function
