Description

Mahadevan et al identified risk factors for blood transfusion associated with revision surgery on a total hip replacement. Patients who require more blood often have longer hospital stays. The authors are from University Hospitals of Leicester and Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

Patient selection: surgical revision of a total hip replacement

Predictors for blood loss:

(1) older age (cutoff not given but hospital stay longer if > 70 years)

(2) male gender

(3) type of revision (dual component > femoral only > acetabular only)

(4) revision of cemented implants

Predictors for blood transfusion:

(1) preoperative anemia (male < 13 g/dL, female < 12 g/dL)

(2) greater blood loss (based on drop in hemoglobin in g/dL)
