Description

Lo et al correlated clinical features in patients with early Parkinson's disease (PD) and survival. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from The Parkinson's Insitute and Clinical Center, Kaiser Permanente, and Stanford University in California.

Clinical types of PD (based on presence within 2 years of diagnosis):

(1) tremor-dominant (resting tremor)

(2) postural instability and gait difficulty type

(3) mixed

Predictors of mortality:

(1) older age at diagnosis of PD

(2) postural instability and gait difficulty type

(3) symmetrical motor signs

(4) cognitive impairment (risk increases with severity)

(5) hallucinations

(6) dysphagia

where:

• Symmetrical motor signs was present in only 3% of patients.

• For the implementation at age > 70 will be used to indicate increased risk.
