Description

Durand et al identified factors associated with respiratory failure and the need for mechanical ventilation in a patient with the Guillain-Barre syndrome. The authors are from Raymond Poincare Teaching Hospital and Saint-Louis Teaching Hospital in France.

Parameters:

(1) vital capacity (VC) as percent of predicted

(2) compound muscular action potential amplitudes (CMAP) in mV after stimulation of the proximal common peroneal nerve

(2) compound muscular action potential amplitudes (CMAP) in mV after stimulation of the distal common peroneal nerve

ratio of the proximal to distal compound muscular action potential =

= (proximal CMAP in mV) / (distal CMAP in mV) * 100%
