Blume et al identified predictors for healing of a transmetatarsal amputation. These can help identify a patient who may require closer monitoring and additional surgery. The authors are from Yale University and Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
Different time intervals for healing at the amputation site:
(1) early
(2) late (not healed by 3 months)
(3) never
Factors associated with healing:
(1) ability to ambulate
(2) revascularized limb (i.e., good perfusion)
Factors associated with non-healing:
(1) presence of end-stage renal disease
(2) leukocytosis (elevated white blood cell count)
