Description

Aboutanos et al identified predictors for a poor fetal outcome if a pregnant woman undergoes trauma. The authors are from the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond

Poor fetal outcomes included fetal death and hydrops fetalis.

Predictors of a poor fetal outcome:

(1) higher maternal age

(2) higher injury severity index (ISS)

(3) elevated serum lactate

(4) occurrence in the first trimester

These predictors can help identify a pregnant woman who may require more aggressive management.
