Description

Di Somma et al evaluated Italian patients admitted to the hospital with acute heart failure. They used BNP levels to help to identify patients who may require more aggressive management over time. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Italy and the San Diego VA Hospital.

Patient selection: admission for acute heart failure

Adverse outcomes:

(1) readmission for heart failure

(2) death from cardiovascular event

Parameters:

(1) admission BNP in pg/mL

(2) discharge BNP in pg/mL

percent reduction in BNP between admission and discharge =

= ((admission BNP) - (discharge BNP) / (admission BNP) * 100%
