Description

Power lawnmowers are associated with a number of injuries, some of which can be serious.


 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) age (< 15 years or > 60 years)

(2) intoxication

(3) lack of or removal of safety protection on the mower

(4) steep slope

(5) lack of personal protective equipment (eyewear, appropriate clothing, appropriate shoes)

(6) lifting or moving the mower

(7) servicing, especially while the motor is running

(8) slippery surface

(9) mowing under low trees

(10) using a rider mower while carrying a small child

(11) being a bystander while someone else mows the yard

(12) smoking while adding gasoline

 

Injuries:

(1) laceration, often blade related

(2) amputations

(3) projectiles

(4) insect bites

(5) overexertion including strain

(6) heat exposure

(7) sunburn

(8) thermal burn

(9) fracture

(10) fall (including fall from riding mower

(11) pull cord injury

(12) electrocution if cut an electric cord

(13) noise
