Description

Post-Erasmus Depression describes a depression that affects college students in Europe following participation in the Erasmus project. A similar depression may follow any experience that is fun and filled with new thoughts and ideas only to be followed by a return to a previous mundane existence.

Selection: participation in a program such as the Erasmus Project in Europe

The typical person experiences:

(1) exposure to new friends, places and ideas that is highly enjoyable and intoxicating

(2) return to previous existence which is viewed as a let down

(3) transient depression while mourning the loss of excitement

The syndrome can become more complex if

(1) the person engaged in serious partying during the experience and now has reasons for serious regrets (addiction, sexually-transmitted disease, police record, etc).

(2) the person is from a small town or cloistered existence

(3) pre-existing depressive disorder
