Description

Wengritzky et al developed a postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) intensity scale. This can help to identify a patient with clinically significant nausea and vomiting. The authors are from Monash University and Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

Parameters:

(1) severity of nausea

(2) pattern of nausea

(3) duration of nausea in hours

intensity scale =

= (points for severity) * (points for pattern) * (number of hours)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: < 1

• maximum score: depends on duration of the nausea

• A score >= 50 was defined as clinically important.
