Description

Maddocks et al describe an assessment instrument for evaluating players who have suffered a head injury. This screened for problems in orientation and in loss of recent memories. The authors are from the University of Melbourne and Monash University in Australia, and the instrument was used to evaluate Australian Rules Football players.

Protocol: All of the following questions are asked either within 10 minutes of the injury or when the patient becomes conscious.

Items for assessing orientation: 8

Items for assessing recent memory: 6

Response

Points

correct

1

uncertain

0

incorrect

0

orientation subscore =

= SUM(points for the 8 orientation questions)

recent memory subscore =

= SUM(points for the 6 recent memory questions)

total score =

= SUM(points for all 14 questions)

Interpretation:

• minimum scores: 0

• maximum total score: 14

• The higher the score the better.

• The measure of recent memory loss was more sensitive for mild concussion than the orientation items.
