The platelet count may predict a patient's prognosis in the intensive care unit (UCU).
The prognosis of a patient in the ICU is worse if:
(1) the nadir platelet is less than 150,000 per µL
(2) the ratio of the lowest platelet count to admission platelet count is <= 50%
(3) a platelet count on day 4 that shows a 30% decline from the admission platelet count (ratio of platelet count on day 4 to admission platelet count <= 70%)
