Description

In infants and children, for whom the standard 100 grams fat diet cannot be used, the per cent coefficient of fat retention is a more useful expression. This term is also called the coefficient of fat absorption.

percent coefficient of fat retention =

= difference between the fecal fat and ingested fat expressed as a percentage of ingested fat =

= (((dietary fat) - (fecal fat)) * 100 / (dietary fat))

Interpretation:

• The coefficient of fat retention of normal children and adults is 95% or higher.

• A low value is seen in premature infants or in steatorrhea.
