Description

Tepas et al developed the Pediatric Risk Indicator (PRI) to serve as an objective measure of injury severity in pediatric trauma patients. This can help identify pediatric patients who may require aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Florida in Jacksonville and Tufts-New England Medical Center.

Parameters:

(1) Injury Severity Score (ISS)

(2) Glasgow Coma Score (GCS)

(3) Pediatric Trauma Score (PTS)

pediatric risk index =

= (injury severity score) / ((Glasgow Coma Score) + ABS(Pediatric Trauma Score))

where:

• ABS = absolute value, used since the PTS can have negative values.

Interpretation:

• minimum PRI: 0

• maximum PRI: affected by ISS, but > 2.5.

• A PRI < 1 was associated with a low mortality, short hospitalization and low impairment.

• A PRI > 1 is associated with a higher mortality, longer hospitalization and higher impairment.
