Description

Some corals release palytoxin, which can cause the rapid onset of disabling toxicity.

Palytoxins are produced by some species of zoanthid marine coral (Palythoa species).

Exposure occurs from generation of aerosols or handling the corals with bare hands.

Signs and symptoms may include:

(1) bitter metallic and/or salty taste

(2) paresthesias

(3) nausea and vomiting

(4) weakness and/or muscle spasms

(5) ataxia

(6) loss of appetite

(7) dyspnea

(8) headache

(9) cough

(10) joint and/or muscle pains

(11) fever

(12) tremors

(13) dry or scratchy throat with dysphonia

(14) dyphagia

(15) dizziness

The diagnosis is confirmed by demonstrating a palytoxin in a sample from the aquarium.

The coral and contaminated items may be decontaminated in dilute (10%) household bleach solution for at least 30 minutes.
