Description

The oxygen uptake during stepping exercise can be calculated based on the stepping rate and the nature of the stepping done.

Conditions: The equation is appropriate for power outputs between 300 and 1200 kg•m/min.

oxygen uptake in mL per kg per min =

= (horizontal oxygen uptake) + (vertical oxygen uptake)

horizontal oxygen uptake =

= 0.35 * (steps per minute)

vertical oxygen uptake =

= (step height in meters) * (steps per minute) * (vertical factor)

where:

• vertical factor = 0.6 if only stepping down; 1.8 if only stepping up; 2.4 if stepping up and down

• 0.35 is the regression constant for converting steps per minute to mL per kg per minute.

• The resting oxygen uptake is included with the horizontal and vertical components of the equation.
