Bron et al reported the Oxford grading scheme for describing epithelial surface damage over the cornea and conjunctiva in a patient with dry eye. The authors are from the University of Oxford and the National Eye Institute at NIH.
Method:
(1) Apply a suitable fluorescent stain for assessing ocular surface damage to the eye being evaluated (left or right). Areas of damage are seen as punctate dots.
(2) Compare the general appearance ("gestalt") with the reference panel (Figure 1, page 641).
(3) Count lesions over the entire ocular surface.

• The dot count for each grade progresses in increments of LOG10 0.5 (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, etc).
• Grade V is diffuse with areas of confluence.
