Orthostatic Intolerance Symptoms | Grades of Functional Impairment

The severity of orthopedic intolerance can be graded by its clinical features.

Parameters:

(1) frequency of orthostatic symptoms without orthostatic stressors

(2) frequency of orthostatic symptoms with orthostatic stressors

(3) length of time able to stand

(4) restrictions in activities of daily living (ADL)

Orthostatic stressors may include:

(1) prolonged standing

(2) a meal

(3) exertion

(4) heat stress

Frequency Without Stressor	Frequency with Stressor	Time Able to Stand	Restrictions on ADL	Grade
infrequent	occasional or when stressor severe	> 15 minutes	none or minimal	I
occasional (weekly)	frequent	> 5 minutes	moderate	II
frequent	constant	>= 1 minute	severe	III
constant	constant	unable to stand at all or < 1 minute	extreme	IV
