A tsunami that occurs without a preceding earthquake being felt is termed an orphan tsunami.
Causes of an orphan tsunami:
(1) distant earthquake (thousands of miles away)
(2) non-earthquake cause (massive landslide, etc)
Risk factors for a disaster associated with an orphan tsunami:
(1) arrival at night or when visibility is poor
(2) no advanced warning
(3) large waves
(4) being in a vulnerable location
