Description

Menzies et al used an survey questionnaire to ask a building's occupants to rate the quality of different environmental conditions. This can help identify problems and get an overview of the living conditions.

Environmental conditions:

(1) temperature

(2) humidity

(3) air circulation

(4) lighting

(5) noise

(6) space

(7) dust

(8) smoke

(9) odors

These were each scored using on an ordinal scale. The values are not defined, but a possible scale might include:

Condition

Points

ideal

0

good

1

fair

2

poor

3

terrible

4

total score =

= SUM(points for each condition)

The total score was rescaled to span the range of 0 to 100.

rescaled value =

= ((total score) / 45) * 100

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0, indicating ideal conditions

• maximum score: 100, indicating a truly awful environment
