Description

A homeless person may develop a number of nutritional issues secondary to poor diet.


 

Sources of food:

(1) bought in a store, cafeteria or restaurant

(2) stolen

(3) food bank

(4) leftovers or outdates

(5) soup kitchen

 

Issues:

(1) inability to get food and going hungry

(2) vitamin deficiencies (scurvy, beri-beri, other)

(3) protein malnutrition

(4) food spoilage and ability to store food safely

(5) contaminated food (with chemicals, dirt, insect, etc.)

(6) uncooked or poorly cooked food

(7) skipping meals because of binge drinking or drug abuse

(8) pica
