Description

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) can be diagnosed using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) definition.


 

Criteria for COPD:

(1) presence of emphysema and/or chronic bronchitis

(2) one or more of the following caused by emphysema or chronic bronchitis:

(2a) functional disability (inability to perform activities of daily living) secondary to dyspnea or other complication of COPD

(2b) history of hospitalization for treatment of COPD

(2c) requires chronic oral or inhaled bronchodilator therapy

(2d) FEV1 less than 75% of the predicted value

 

Exclusions:

(1) only pulmonary disease asthma

(2) sarcoidosis

(3) diffuse interstitial fibrosis
