Description

A patient with end-stage kidney disease may develop ascites.


 

Features of nephrogenic ascites:

(1) end-stage renal disease

(2) persistent ascites resistant to medical management

(3) no other explanation

(4) reversal after kidney transplantation. Other therapies may include continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and peritoneovenous shunt.

(5) poor prognosis if untreated

 

The mechanism is uncertain and may be multifactorial.

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) ascites related to nephrotic syndrome
