Description

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) reported risk factors for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a patient with cancer. These can help to identify a patient who should be evaluated for PTSD.

Patient selection: cancer

Risk factors for PTSD:

(1) cancer recurrence

(2) intensive cancer therapy

(3) advanced cancer

(4) younger age

(5) past history of trauma exposure

(6) past history of mental health issues prior to the diagnosis of cancer

(7) poor coping skills

(8) lower income

(9) lower education

(10) less social support

The more risk factors that are present the greater the risk that the patient will develop PTSD.
