Description

The Nausea Profile (NP) was designed to evaluate the experience of nausea by a patient. It can be used to monitor the amount of nausea felt by a patient over time and to determine the effectiveness of interventions. The profile was developed at the Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania.

Dimensions of nausea distress and associated symptoms:

(1) somatic distress: fatigue, weak, hot, sweaty, lightheaded, shakiness

(2) GI distress: sick, stomach awareness/discomfort, as if he/she might vomit, ill, queasy

(3) emotional distress: nervous, scared/afraid, worry, upset, panic, hopeless

Statements: 17 items on how the patient feels

Responses for each statement: from 0 (not at all) to 9 (extremely severe)

subscore for somatic distress =

= (point for item 1) + (point for item 3) + (point for item 5) + (point for item 9) + (point for item 16) + (point for item 17)

subscore for GI distress =

= (point for item 4) + (point for item 6) + (point for item 13) + (point for item 14) + (point for item 15)

subscore for emotional distress =

= (point for item 2) + (point for item 7) + (point for item 8) + (point for item 10) + (point for item 11) + (point for item 12)

total overall score =

= SUM(points for all 17 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum somatic distress subscore: 54

• maximum GI distress subscore: 45

• maximum emotional distress subscore: 54

• maximum overall score: 153

percentage for somatic distress =

= ((somatic distress subscore) / 54) * 100%

percentage for GI distress =

= ((GI distress subscore) / 45) * 100%

percentage for emotional distress =

= ((emotional distress subscore) / 54) * 100%

percentage for overall distress =

= ((total overall score) / 153) * 100%
