Description

Natural rubber latex (NRL) can be found in many products used for healthcare. A patient with a serious allergy to latex can develop anaphylaxis if exposed to one of these products.


 

Situations where there is a higher risk of exposure to latex:

(1) hospital in a developing country

(2) small or rural hospital

(3) homes

(4) use of older equipment

 

Supplies that may contain latex:

(1) gloves

(2) syringes

(3) multidose drug vials (rubber tops)

(4) adhesive tape

(5) tourniquets

(6) surgical drains

(7) leg bag straps

(8) electrode pads

(9) masks

(10) goggles

(11) catheters

(12) injection ports

(13) endotracheal tubes

(14) intravenous tubing

(15) oral or nasal airway

 

Devices that may contain latex:

(1) sphyngomamometers

(2) stethoscopes

(3) respirators

(4) anesthesia masks

(5) operating table pads
