Description

Hemorrhage between nasal septal cartilage and the adjacent mucoperichondrium can result in a hematoma.


 

NOTE: Failure to treat the hematoma early and aggressively can result in serious complications. Referral to an ENT surgeon is usually indicated.

 

Risk factors:

(1) trauma

(2) bleeding disorder

(3) antiplatelet drug or anticoagulant

(4) pediatric age group

 

A hematoma can occur even after minor injuries.

 

Clinical features:

(1) red, fluctuant swelling

(2) tends to obstruct the nasal cavity bilaterally

(3) adjacent bruising

 

Complications:

(1) nasal septal necrosis with deformity (saddle nose, etc)

(2) nasal septal abscess
