The staging system for myeloma of the Southeastern Cancer Study Group is similar to that of Carbone et al, except that the Karnofsky performance index is used.
A "poor risk" if one or more of the following are present:
(1) hemoglobin < 9 g/dL
(2) serum calcium > 12 mg/dL
(3) Karnofsky performance status < 60%
(5) BUN > 30 mg/dL
