The motor scooter handlebar syndrome occurs when a rider on a scooter gets thrown against the scooter handlebar during an accident.
Defining injury: intimal damage to the common femoral artery in the groin
Clinical findings:
(1) history of a scooter accident with the rider hitting the handlebar
(2) localized swelling in the groin
(3) localized tenderness
(4) bruit
Diagnosis may be made with Doppler ultrasound or vascular studies.
Possible complications:
(1) acute arterial occlusion
(2) arterial aneurysm
(3) arterial rupture
