Mondor’s disease (superficial thrombophlebitis) can affect the penis.
Features:
(1) The patient presents with an area of induration in the penis that may be tender to palpation.
(2) The lesion may be in the penile sulcus and may be circumferential.
(3) There is a palpable cord in the area of induration.
(4) Doppler ultrasonography shows that the cord is a thrombus within a superficial vein.
(5) Biopsy shows a thick-walled vein with an organizing thrombus.
Risk factors may include:
(1) hypercoagulable state
(2) local trauma
(3) tight clothing
Differential diagnosis:
(1) non-venereal sclerosing lymphangitis
(2) infection
Therapy:
(1) temporary abstinence from sexual intercourse
(2) corticosteroids
