Description

Modifications of the original Rodnan score have been devised to overcome practical problems with its use. One of the more commonly used modifications involves evaluation of fewer sites (17 rather than 26) and fewer grades (0 to 3 instead of 0 to 4).

Sites examined for the 17 site modification:

(1) face

(2) anterior chest

(3) abdomen

(4) left fingers

(5) right fingers

(6) dorsum left hand

(7) dorsum right hand

(8) left forearm

(9) right forearm

(10) left upper arm

(11) right upper arm

(12) left thigh

(13) right thigh

(14) left lower leg

(15) right lower leg

(16) dorsum left foot

(17) dorsum right foot

Description

Skin Score

normal

0

mild skin thickening

1

moderate skin thickening, unable to pinch

2

severe skin thickening, unable to move

3

skin score =

= SUM(points for the 17 sites)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 51

• The higher the score, the more severe and extensive the involvement.

Performance:

• Ramsden et al (1986) found the modified score faster to perform but highly correlated with the original Rodnan score.
