Description

Wood et al modified the 18-item Life Satisfaction Index Z of Neugarten et al, shortening it to 13 items. This can help identify elderly patients with low morale who may need closer monitoring and interventions.

The instrument consists of 13 statements.

Responses for Statements 1, 2, 4, 5 7, 8, 9. 12 Points
agree 2
neither agree nor disagree 1
disagree 0

Responses for Statements 3, 6, 10, 11, 13 Points
disagree 2
neither agree nor disagree 1
agree 0

where:

• An alternative grading scheme would be to have 5 responses (strongly agree, agree somewhat, neutral, disagree somewhat, strongly disagree).

total index =

= SUM(points for all 13 statements)

Interpretation:

• minimum index: 0

• maximum index: 26

• The higher the index the greater the morale and satisfaction.

Index Morale
<= 12 low
13 - 21 moderate
>= 22 high
