Description

Patel et al reported a modified fraility index (mFI) derived from the Canadian Study of Health and Aging Fraility Index. The authors are from Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas.


 

Patient selection: adult >= 60 years of age

 

Parameters scored absent or present:

(1) cerebrovascular accident or transient ischemia attack (TIA)

(2) impaired cognition (demention, Alzheimer’s disease, other)

(3) history of recurrent falls

(4) diabetes mellitus not controlled by diet

(5) history of syncope or blackouts

(6) psychotic disorder (bipolar disease, paranoia, schizophrenia, posttraumatic stress disorder)

(7) thyroid disease

(8) history of seizures

(9) depression

(10) history of malignancy

(11) decubitus ulcer

(12) congestive heart disease (CHF)

(13) cardiac disease (coronary artery disease, aortic stenosis, mitral valve prolapse, arrhythmia)

(14) history of myocardial infarction

(15) urinary incontinence

(16) Parkinson’s disease

(17) acute or chronic renal disease

(18) respiratory disease (COPD, emphysema, obstructive sleep apnea, bronchitis, etc)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 20

• The higher the score the greater the mortality.

• A score >= 4 was associated with odds ratio of 5 for 1 year mortality after femoral neck fracture.
