Description

Osler et al developed equations that modified the original Baux score. This provides an updated version that can be used to estimate the risk of death. The authors are from the University of Vermont, University of Rochester and University of Massachusetts.

NOTE: The modified score shares features with the Cape Town Modified Baux Burn Score (above)

Data: 39,888 patients from 0 to 100 years of age in the National Burn Repository

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) percent body surface area with second and third degree burns (from 0 to 100)

(3) inhalation injury

Inhalation Injury

Points

absent

0

present

17

revised score =

= (age) + (percent BSA with significant burns) + (points for inhalation injury)

where:

• The Cape Town score had different grades of inhalation injury.

X =

= (0.0775 * (revised score)) - 8.8163

probability of death =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))
