Description

Kanters et al modified a grading scale proposed by the Ventral Hernia Working Group (BHWG) for predicting surgical site complications following ventral hernia repair. The modified scale improves accuracy of predicting surgical site occurrences. The authors are from University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland.

Patient selection: open ventral hernia repair

Outcomes: surgical site occurrences = surgical site infection (majority), seroma, wound dehiscence, enterocutaneous fistula

Parameters:

(1) history of wound infection

(2) comorbid conditions (smoker, obese, COPD, diabetes mellitus)

(3) surgical site status (clean, clean-contaminated, contaminated, dirty)
