Description

Balzan et al identified risk factors for mortality following hepatic resection, These findings can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Beaujon Hospital and the University of Paris in France.

Patient selection: hepatic resection

Outcome: mortality in the 60 days after surgery

Parametes:

(1) age in years

(2) hepatic fibrosis of patient’s liver as stage (F0 to F4)

(3) 50-50 criteria of Balzan et al met on day 5

Interpretation:

• minimum cumulative odds ratio: 1

• maximum cumulative odds ratio: 4,450

• The higher the cumulative odds ratios the greater the risk of postoperative mortality.
