Description

Eskelinen et al reported a healthy diet index to identify a patient who may be at increased risk for developing dementia in later life. The authors are from multiple universities in Finland and Sweden.


 

The index is modificaton of the index of Trichopoulou et al.

 

Dietary parameters where high intake is beneficial:

(1) vegetables and roots

(2) berries and fruits

(3) bread (cereals)

(4) fish

(5) coffee

(6) monounsaturated fatty acids from milk products and spreads

(7) polyunsaturated fatty acids from milk products and spreads

(10) candies

(11) sweetened soft drinks

(12) sugar lumps in coffee

(13) salty fish

(15) salt intake (0 points if none added at mealtime, 1 if salt added)

(16) alcohol intake (0 if none or heavy, 1 if moderate)

= SIM(points for all 17 dietary items)

 

Interpretation:

• minimum index: 0

• maximum index: 17

• A score > 8 indicates a high adherence to a healthy diet.
